I noticed white pitted areas on a phal leaf but didn't pay much attention. I repotted several phals this summer and although I used new razor blades removing some dead stuff, I didn't clean my hands between plants. I think by roughly removing dead roots and old parts of plant, I must have contaminated them all. Now 6 plants have the same whitish-pitted areas on the leaves and I probably will have to toss them all. Any remedy at all? Hard lesson to learn.

They are widely known for their large, showy flowers, and were used extensively in hybridization for the cut-flower trade until quite recently. This genus and the numerous hybrids come close, through their beauty, to the idealized picture we have of the orchids. The flowers of the hybrids can vary in size from 5 cm to 15 cm or more. They occur in all colors except true blue and black.

The typical flower has three rather narrow sepals and three usually broader petals : two petals are similar to each other, and the third is the quite different conspicuous lip, featuring various markings and specks and an often frilly margin. At the base, the margins are folded into a tube. Each flower stalk originates from a pseudobulb. The number of flowers varies; it can be just one or two, or sometimes up to ten.

I have been hoping for kikis, but my understanding (based on web research) is that they are supposed to grow off the flower stalk. I'm not sure what to do with this... both of the parent orchids are particularly special to me and I don't want to risk their health. I would also like to know if there is a cause for this type of growth, thanks much!

I've been reading up on Phals and it seems there are differing opinions on what kind of light requirements are needed (I'm probably just misunderstanding then but I'm still pretty new to growing orchids). My main question is, should a Phalaenopsis be given direct sunlight?

As you can see from the attached picture, I have a couple of Phals and a dendrobium growing in the window sill. They get about 1 hour & 40 minutes of direct sunlight there. Is this a good or bad thing for them? Should they be somewhere else?

Any help you more experienced growers can provide is greatly appreciated.

I completed building my greenhouse in Colfax about 9 months ago. Since it is small and tightly constructed, I decided to try using a small electric heater to start with. I quickly discovered that the electric heater could not maintain 50 degrees when the outside ambient temp is 20. I used an unvented propane heater to supplement on cold nights.

I was warned a long time ago that an unvented gas heater could cause problems, but I figured that it might not be too bad as a temporary supplement. Unfortunately, that was not the case as almost every bud in the greenhouse blasted within weeks – even on plants that, in the past, have been productive and bulletproof.

This link pretty much describes what have heard…
http://www.umass.edu/umext/floriculture/fact_sheets/greenhouse_management/jb_non_vented_heaters.htm

Today I met someone who deliberately vents a propane water heater directly into his greenhouse. His growing results are excellent although he did report a bit of flower malformation on one of his prize specimens.

I’m working on installing a small, vented propane heater, like I’ve used in my previous greenhouse, but I’m still baffled by this contradiction.

Hi,

I was at the last meeting and learned that some Orchids needs a dry rest for it to bloom or stay in bloom. Now I am confused and is unsure if I should water my orchids or not. Does anyone know what types of orchids needs a dry rest or does it solely depends on where it originated?

If that's the case how do I go about finding out that information? Is there a book available or a specific site that I can go to without having to comb the internet for this information?

Right now I have one phal that has a spike and one cymbidium that might have three. My Sherry Baby's new leaf growth is abnormally light green. Not sure if it's too cold or not enough light, too much water.

Thanks,

Does anyone know of a good local source for these items?

What is the best way to cut tree fern bark squares into smaller sizes? I don't want to destroy the squares and it seems it could be tricky.

What about cork bark? I was just going to try a little hand saw.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The cymbidium I bought about 6 weeks ago looks healthy so far and still has flowers on it, except the bottom few leaves are turning brown starting at the tips. It is inside with bright indirect light. I let it dry out between waterings, and water about once a week or 9-10 days. When it feels kind of light, I water. I'm having trouble figuring out what is enough or too much water for this plant. Thanks for your help.
